VCE Further Mathematics (FM)
Further mathematics mainly expands on foundational mathematical skills and is comparatively easier than other maths subjects. However this results in a considerably higher level of competition and significantly less room for error. The subject is considered to have a low level difficulty and generally scaling down the study score by 1-2 marks.
VCE FM Study Design:
The VCE FM study design differs from the other 2 maths subjects in that while unit 3 topics are core to all students, however in unit 4 students and schools can choose any 2 of the available 4 modules to study.
FM Unit 3 Core Topics:
Data analysis:
● Data distribution analysis
● Association between two variables
● Investigation and modelling of linear relations
● Investigation and modelling of time series data
Recursion and Financial Modelling:
● Depreciation of assets
● Compound interest
● Reducing balance
● Annuities and perpetuities
● Compound interest in annuity investments
FM Unit 4 Modules:
Matrices:
● Application of matrices
● Transitional matrices
Network and Decision:
● Graphs and networks
V Exploring and travelling problems
● Trees and minimum connector
● Flow problems
● Shortest path problems
● Matching problems
● Scheduling problem and critical path analysis
Geometry and Measurement:
● Trigonometry measurements
● Spherical geometry
Graphs and Relations:
● Construction and interpretation of graphs
● Linear programming
FM SACs:
Unit 3 SACs contributes 20% to a students final study score and is composed of 3 outcomes. Unit 4 SACs also contributes 14% (34% in total for school-based assessments) and is composed of 3 outcomes. There will be 1 major modelling or problem solving assessment on the first selected module and 1 on the second selected module.
Final Exams:
The final exams contribute 66% of a students final study score and are composed of exam 1 (33%) and exam 2 (33%). Each exam is composed of 2 sections, sections A and B. Section A contains questions from the core areas of study, students are to complete all questions in this section. Section B questions are divided into the 4 modules of unit 4. Students are only required to complete questions from 2 selected modules.
Note: Students can choose to complete questions from a module that was not studied in their school if they wish.
Exam 1 is composed of all multiple choice questions from both the core units and the selected modules.
Exam 2 is composed of all written response questions from both core units and the selected modules.
Students are permitted 1 bound reference and both a CAS and scientific calculator for both exam 1 and exam 2.
FM Past Exam:
